Live like a local
At the market, look a little closer.
Shopping, makers, bargaining and respecting work: a different way to bring something home.
Know what you are looking for
Before leaving, choose an intention: learn about materials, buy something useful or meet a maker in a setting open to visitors. A market is first a place of work. Avoid blocking an aisle for a photo and ask before touching objects or filming people. If you would like to visit a workshop, arrange it instead of assuming open access.
Ask about origin and workmanship
For a brand or handmade item, ask where it is designed, where it is made and who does the work. “Local” can mean several things; price alone does not explain origin. Check the finish and measurements, and ask about terms for a custom order. Our maker selection will grow as checks are completed, without turning unknown addresses into recommendations.
Leave a good encounter behind
Ask whether the price is negotiable, make your offer courteously and accept that an agreement may not be possible. If you spend time learning a technique, ask how to pay for a demonstration or workshop. A good souvenir need not be a spectacular bargain: it can simply be an object chosen carefully and a transaction understood by both people.
